Learning Objectives:
The learning goal/purpose of this educational activity is:
To help registered nurses working in primary care settings advance their knowledge regarding tobacco cessation. The nurse will take back to her practice an updated knowledge regarding assessment of patient tobacco use, recognition of patient readiness to engage in a cessation program, and ability to provide the necessary resources and support for patient success.
The objectives of this education activity are:
- Explain the magnitude of the problem of tobacco use.
- Discuss the role of the nurse in encouraging patients to quit use of tobacco products.
- Discuss clinical practice guidelines related to tobacco cessation techniques.
- Describe evidence-based practices for obtaining patient follow-through on tobacco cessation.
- Identify tobacco cessation-related community resources for healthcare providers to use in assisting patients.
- Demonstrate the application of evidence-based tobacco cessation techniques.
